Dr. Melanie Bodnar completed her specialty training in Adult Clinical Hematology and Hematopathology and currently works with Canadian Blood Services providing medical consultation in donor and antenatal testing as well as immunohematology reference testing.  She has an interest in perinatal transfusion medicine and is a medical consultant for the Rare Blood Program. Dr. Bodnar is a member of the COPTN subcommittee of CSTM.

Presenter: Yulia Lin

Dr. Yulia Lin is the Division Head of Transfusion Medicine & Tissue Bank at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Associate Professor in the Department of LMP at the UofT. She is a nationally recognized leader in the areas of transfusion education (Chair, UofT Transfusion Camp); quality improvement (Transfusion Lead, Choosing Wisely Canada); and patient blood management (Chair, Ontario Transfusion Coordinators Steering Committee). Her expertise relates to improving physician transfusion knowledge, quality improvement in transfusion practice and patient blood management. She has published several studies in high impact journals in the area of transfusion medicine education.

Alison O'Leary graduated from the Medical Laboratory Science program at The Michener Institute in 2013. 

She joined the Transfusion Medicine Department at SickKids in 2015. 

Recently she completed training to become a Certified Tissue Bank Specialist and joined the Tissue Lab at SickKids in 2020.

Presenter: Kelly Y.W. Chin

Kelly Y. W. Chin is a 3rd year Internal Medicine resident physician at the University of Saskatchewan. She will begin hematology residency training at the University of Calgary this July, and previously earned her MD from McMaster University and honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Her current research interests are in transfusion medicine and quality improvement.

Dr Sophia Peng is currently a third-year resident in hematopathology at the University of Alberta. She spent her childhood in Taipei, Shanghai, and Sydney, before immigrating to Canada and completing her undergraduate and medical degree at the University of British Columbia, Northern Medical Program.

Presenter: Aline Le Christine Cserti-Gazdewich 

Christine Cserti-Gazdewich (supervisor/senior author) is a transfusion medicine specialist and consultant hematologist, originally trained in internal medicine and clinical hematology in Toronto, and in transfusion medicine at Harvard.  Based back at the University Health Network for the last 15 years, she co-directs the blood transfusion service with responsibilities extending out to other sites, and serves as a clinical/consultant hematologist for UHN/MSH.  Her areas of professional focus are in immunohematology and hemovigilance.

15A case-based approach to rare blood acquisition in a patient with multiple antibodies

Presenter: Caylea Foster

Dr. Caylea Foster is a PGY-4 General Pathology resident at the University of Calgary. She completed a Master of Science in Forensic Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh prior to starting her medical training at McMaster University. While Dr. Foster has accepted a forensic pathology fellowship position at the St. Louis City Medical Examiner’s Office, MI, beginning in 2022, she hopes to incorporate transfusion medicine into her future practice.

Donna joined ORBCoN in April 2020 as the Clinical Project Coordinator – Nursing. Her previous nursing experiences include transfusion safety officer, perioperative patient blood management, preadmission clinics, community health, obstetrical and critical care nursing. She is also a member of the Education Committee for the Ontario Transfusion Transmitted Injuries Surveillance System (TISS-ON). 

Her professional passion is transfusion medicine, promoting best practice for patient safety.
